Holidays bring DUIs

It’s no question that American’s love to party—but how much and at what cost? According to the CDC, in 2018 an alcohol impaired driver got behind the wheel 147 million times. From 2003 to 2012, 2,560 people died as a result of car accidents related to alcohol impaired driving in the state of Mississippi. In 2018, 26.5% of total fatalities in Mississippi were a result of alcohol impaired driving.

We’ve all heard the warning during holidays: “Drive safe, people will be out drinking!” or that there’s going to be a DUI checkpoint tonight. But just how dangerous is it to be out driving during a holiday? As it turns out, it can be very risky during several holidays.

According to MoneyGeek, the 5 most dangerous holidays for DUI are as follows:

1: New Year’s Eve.

Unsurprisingly, New Year’s Eve is the biggest night for DUIs in the United States—what is surprising is the chance of getting a DUI on New Year’s Eve is 129% higher than average.

2: 4th of July.

The 4th of July is actually the deadliest week of the year—on Independence Day alone a DUI is 100% more likely.

3: Thanksgiving

The night before Thanksgiving has become something of a holiday itself—Blackout Wednesday, or also known as “Dranksgiving.” It makes sense that Thanksgiving has found itself in third since, according to the AAA Foundation, Thanksgiving eve is the biggest drinking day of the year typically because most people do not have to go to work the next day and people are getting together for drinks at the local bar with family and old friends who are in town for a short time to celebrate the holiday.

4: Labor Day

Remember, a long weekend could mean a longer stay in jail. Labor Day is the fourth worst holiday for drunk driving. This long weekend meant to pay tribute to working men and women comes in fourth—a day where a DUI is 61% more likely.

5: Memorial Day

A sad way to kick off the summer, Memorial Day finds a spot at fifth place.

Memorial Day lands at number five on our list. Though Memorial Day seems a little safer, a DUI is 54% more likely than average, it’s actually the second deadliest weekend of the entire year.

The sad truth is that some of the happiest days of the year are also the deadliest. The consequences for driving under the influence can be costly for the driver financially, but even worse it could cost them their own or someone else’s life.
